George Orwell defined doublethink as “the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.
When it comes to war, spending, and more, President Barack Obama’s 2010 State of the Union address showed that doublethink is alive and well in Washington, D.C.

Rewind a thousand years to merry old England when Canute* was king. King Canute had lots of self esteem. So much self esteem in fact that he said to his merry men, “Hey, merry men, watch this!” He went down to the beach where he could make his royal pronouncement. Looking out at the ocean he commanded the incoming tide, “Stop, stop I say!” Canute knew he could do it. All his merry men knew he could do it. But the tide didn’t know it. All the king’s power couldn’t change the tide. His merry men were a little less merry. They all said, “See you later, Canute” and wandered back to their huts for some hot gruel. Canute went back home to his castle to ponder the possibility that just maybe there is a limit to his authority over the laws of nature.
Now fast-forward to today’s merry old Washington, D.C. where Barack† is king. King Barack has lots of self esteem. So much self esteem in fact that he said to his merry congresspersons, “Hey, y’all, watch this!” He went down to the TV cameras where he could make his royal pronouncement. Looking out at the nation he commanded the collapsing economy, “Stop, stop I say!” Barack knew he could do it. All his merry congresspersons knew he could do it. But the economy didn’t know it. All the king’s power couldn’t change the economy.
But King Barack’s merry congresspersons weren’t like King Canute’s. They keep cheering on King Barack, even though his economic mandates never did any good. That’s because they were personally gaining so much from the king’s corrupt system that they didn’t care what happened to the country.
And King Barack wasn’t like King Canute either. He had so much self esteem that he never once considered the idea that maybe, just maybe, there is a limit to his authority over the laws of a free market.
*There really was a King Canute who thought he could command the tide
†There really is a King Obama who thinks he can command the economy
Joe Louis donated $1 Million to a government charity only to be taxed the full amount and ran into IRS debt slavery for nearly his entire life. His IRS debt ran up as high as $1 Million to a point where each year’s interest accumulated to over $100,000. The IRS literally taxed Joe Louis to death.
